Now that we’re well into the summer grilling season, it’s the perfect time for a few maintenance checks to keep your grill running smoothly. Here are some tips on how to maintain your grill.

Tools and supplies

  • Wire grill brush
  • Dish soap and water
  • White vinegar and water solution
  • Sponge
  • Soft towel or rag

Step 1 – Test for gas leaks

Once a month, run soapy water along the gas hose and connectors to check for leaks. Turn on the gas, but do not light the grill. If you notice bubbles forming, then gas is leaking, and those parts will need to be tightened or replaced to avoid the risk of a dangerous explosion.

Step 2 – Burn off the gunk

Stubborn built-up gunk on metal cooking grates can be easily removed with heat. Fire up your grill to its hottest temperature, and let it sit with the lid closed for 15 minutes. The high temps will turn the gunk to ash, which can be scrubbed away with a wire brush. Let the grates cool, then remove them so you can scrub the undersides as well.

Step 3 – Clean the burners

With the cooking grates removed, you’ll be able to check the cleanliness of the burners. Ignite the grill on low, and pay attention to the color and size of the flame. If the flame is uneven or burns with a weak orange or yellow color, you probably need to clean the burners. Wipe each burner with a damp sponge to remove grime that can block the burner’s ports.

Step 4 – Scrub down the rest

Finally, you’ll want to get rid of all the extra residue that’s formed on the bottom of your grill. If your grill uses removable bottom plates, remove and scrub them thoroughly with a wire brush. This is where most of the excess residue ends up, so you might need to use some extra elbow grease when cleaning these parts.

General tips

  • When not in use, cover your grill with a waterproof cover to protect it from the rust-causing elements of nature.
  • For particularly dirty grills, spray the interior with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Let it stand for an hour while the solution breaks down tough residue, then wipe everything clean with a damp sponge.
  • Wash the exterior and side tables with soapy water and a soft towel or rag for a spotless finish.

Outdoor grilling is one of the many joys of summer. Properly maintaining your grill will help ensure it runs cleanly and smoothly every time you fire it up!
